The Declaration of the United Nations was signed in 1942 by 26 states (including the former Czechoslovakia). The UN was officially established on 24 October, 1945 through the ratification of the Charter of the UN as the founding document of the World Organization, which establishes the rights and obligations of member states and establishes institutions and procedures for the functioning of the UN. As an international treaty, the Charter codifies basic principles of international relations – the sovereign equality among states to ban the use of force in solving international disputes. Every year, 24 October is celebrated as United Nations Day.
 
The UN objectives defined in the Charter are: to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principles of equality and self-determination of people; to cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations in attaining these common priorities.

Within the framework of its competencies, the Ministry of Regional Development is active in Sustainable Development, Human Rights (including the right to housing) and Economic and Social Development, especially in relation to human settlements.
